Customer Network Activation.

Every happy customer should lead you to at least 3 new customers. The only way to make it work is to have a system. This is the 5-play system.

The five plays

Five plays, and the one thing that kills each of them.

Every play here is something teams already half-do. The difference between half-doing it and running it is a trigger you can build an alert on and a failure mode you have agreed to avoid.

01

The name drop

Use a champion’s public words to open doors, without asking the champion for anything.

When it fires

A champion has said something public: a case study, a G2 review, a webinar appearance, a quote in a launch post.

What you do
  1. Take the artefact, not the person. You are referencing something they chose to publish, so nothing is being spent.
  2. Find the 20 to 30 people in that champion’s orbit who look like them: same function, same segment, same problem.
  3. Open with the artefact and the specific thing in it, not with the relationship.
What kills it

Claiming more than you have. The moment the email implies an endorsement the champion did not give, one forwarded message to them costs you the champion and the prospect at once.

Working: Reply rates move and the champion never knows the campaign ran.

02

The structured warm intro

A specific, named ask at the one moment the answer is most likely to be yes.

When it fires

A renewal, a closed-won, a QBR that went well, or a support ticket resolved five stars. Goodwill has a half-life and these are the peaks.

What you do
  1. Name the person. “Does anyone come to mind?” is work you have handed to the champion, which is why it gets deferred forever.
  2. Ask across every functional layer, not only your buyer. The VP of Engineering at their company knows VPs of Engineering.
  3. Send a blurb they can forward without editing a word, so the cost to them is one forward rather than one piece of writing.
What kills it

The open-ended ask. It feels polite and it is actually the most expensive version, because it makes the champion do the thinking.

Working: You get forwards, not vouches. A forward costs them nothing and converts nearly as well.

03

The perpetual content asset

One customer story, turned into something that keeps generating for two years.

When it fires

A customer agrees to go on the record. That is the scarce thing, so the plan for it should exist before the call is booked.

What you do
  1. Record once, cut many. A webinar becomes a panel clip, a case study, a quote card, a slide in the deck and a paragraph in the sequence.
  2. Put the customer’s name and face on it, because that is the whole asset. A logo with no human attached is a logo.
  3. Re-run it. The audience for a story is not the audience who saw it in week one.
What kills it

Publishing once. The asset is treated as a launch rather than as inventory, and the thing you spent a customer’s goodwill on runs for a fortnight.

Working: It is still producing pipeline in month eighteen, across channels nobody planned for.

04

The job change play

Someone who already bought from you arrives somewhere new with budget.

When it fires

Any happy user moves: the economic buyer, the champion, a power user, even the admin. The window is measured in weeks, not quarters.

What you do
  1. Week one, congratulate them and attach no ask at all. None. The note exists to be a note.
  2. Week three or four, ask one question: does the new company have the problem the old one had?
  3. Then run the other half. Someone at the account they left is picking up their work, and that handover is a second play, not an afterthought.
What kills it

Attaching the ask to the congratulations. It converts a genuine moment into a transaction, and they can tell.

Working: Every departure produces two plays and you ran both.

05

The in-product ask

Ask at the moment the product just worked, not at the moment your quarter ends.

When it fires

A peak: an upsell completes, an NPS comes back high, a support ticket resolves five stars, a team crosses an adoption threshold.

What you do
  1. Fire from the product event, not from a campaign calendar. The timing is the entire play.
  2. Deduplicate before asking. The fastest way to burn an advocate is to ask twice because two systems both thought they were first.
  3. Route around a no. If this person has been asked recently, the ask should go to the next strongest relationship at that account instead of not going at all.
What kills it

Asking the same person twice. It reads as automation, which it is, and it costs you the relationship the automation existed to use.

Working: The ask lands while the feeling is still there, and nobody gets asked twice.

The market has already moved.

Growth from existing customers is now the #1 CSO priority, and Gartner's 3Q26 CSO Report found that when sales and marketing share metrics, they are 3.6x more likely to drive profitable growth from current customers. Referred customers are more valuable and stay longer. But most companies still activate less than half their advocate base.
